Students spent the last 15 minutes getting their topics approved for their speech.

Worked through words from our review sheet —

sensory details, juxtaposition, voice, oxymoron, concession, anecdote, allusion, bandwagon appeal, analogy, metaphor, meiosis, metonymy, rhetorical question, simile, figure of speech (trope), hyperbole, synecdoche, litotes, and apostrophe. 

We started to discuss de Toqueville, but needed more time. 

HOMEWORK:  Please reread de Toqueville tonight, so you’re ready for discussion tomorrow.

Watched an intro to a documentary on the existence of the city of Troy. 

Took notes on the beginning of The Iliad.

We will begin reading Book XXII tomorrow.

Worked with a partner on “Reading the World” and an essay on page 391.  

Students read it silently and took notes.  Then, they shared their approach with their partner.  

Students then came up with a claim and 4 supporting statements.

Took notes and discussed “The Art/Power of a Story.”

Journal: What is worth fighting for?

Went over the last bit of the “Conclusion Worksheet.”

Spoke briefly about the “MLA” quotation and format worksheets. 

Took notes on Greek Literature & Homer. 

Took notes on the background story of The Iliad.  

There was a masterpiece on the board of the city of Troy and of Greece.  They will be up for sale at a later date.

Acted out Chapter 11, half of it.   We will finish reading/acting out the rest of this chapter tomorrow and then Chapter 12 on Thursday.

Went to the computer lab and wrote an in-class essay.  Students had only the class period to finish this essay.  Students then turned it in to TurnItIn.com.

Passed back the Indian Lit tests and discussed them at length. 

Passed back DOL Test 1.

Passed back the rough drafts of Chinese & Japanese lit essays.

Started discussing most of our “Conclusion Worksheet” as a class.  We will finish this worksheet tomorrow, as well as discuss our “Quotations worksheet.”

Discussed the ramifications of Simon’s death, the sanctity of life, and the societal “game” that many people play. 

Started reading Chapter 10 of LotF, to the bottom of 164. 

HOMEWORK: Students need to finish reading Chapter 10 for tomorrow and be ready for a quiz.  

OTHER HOMEWORK:  Students’ TWITTER PROJECTS are due next Wednesday (12/5).

Worked in groups (of our Chinese/Japanese texts) and talked about the texts, theses, and directions.  Then Mrs. Powell answered questions about rough drafts.

Tomorrow through Friday I will be conferencing with each student regarding their rough drafts.
